From Campus to Community: EWU-ESC’s Social and Environmental Initiatives

The East West University Environmental and Social Club was established in September 1999 with the goal of "Save Life, Save Earth" through different kinds of social and environmental events that encourage eco-friendly living and environmental awareness. The club extends invitations to general students to become members on a consistent basis throughout the academic year. The objective of the club is to raise awareness through social initiatives. The members of the club are involved in different types of social activities throughout the year.

Eco Fair 3.0 is one of the most important events of EWU-ESC, which took place at the East West University in Aftabnagar on May 2024. This two-day event provided an opportunity for many entrepreneurs, especially innovative student entrepreneurs, to showcase their eco-friendly products and solutions. Dhaka Residential Model College Science Club and BAF Shaheen College Dhaka both exhibited interesting work on "Planet vs. Plastic." The purpose of the fair was to encourage college students to embrace responsible behaviors towards the environment, which would ultimately contribute to the protection of the environment.

Another event was held at East West University on 2nd November, 2024, named “Cleanup Campaign,” as part of the “Green Campus Project.” The KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) organized the event in collaboration with the East West University Environmental and Social Club (EWUESC). The campaign aimed to promote “plogging,” an activity that combined jogging or walking with trash pickup. By introducing hands-on exercise, the purpose of the campaign was to encourage participants to adopt sustainable practices and to keep the environment cleaner.

Last year on 15th December, East West University Environmental and Social Club hosted an event called “Voice of Youth: A canvas for people & planet.” This event was a platform for talented individuals to exhibit their creative thoughts and ideas on different topics such as climate change and ecosystems, social injustice, and life at East West University through the mediums of impactful writing, photography, and heartfelt paintings.

Another campaign was launched by EWU-ESC, known as ‘Green Rides: Advocating for Sustainable Transport,’ which aimed to encourage people in urban areas to use environmentally friendly and healthy ways to get around. In order to mitigate carbon emissions and practice healthier lifestyles within the community, the East West University Environmental and Social Club (EWUESC) also advocates for cycling and other sustainable transportation methods.

East West University Environmental and Social Club is making significant progress in promoting awareness of sustainable environment and social well-being by implementing many initiatives. This club speaks to the values of proactive participation and community service both within and beyond the boundaries of the university campus. Through these dynamic and community engagement events, EWU-ESC aims to raise students’ awareness of environmental pollution.
