These self-portraits critique Ocean Pollution by symbolically entangling the body in a fishing net and plastic materials that continue to harm marine ecosystems long after being discarded. With over 8 million tons of plastic waste entering the oceans each year (Parker 2019), these works confront the suIocating consequences of environmental neglect. By embodying an aquatic being caught in synthetic debris, I challenge the illusion of separation between humans and nature. Inspired by Angela Kelly’s question, “What other uses then can self-portraiture be put to?” (1979), I use the genre as a tool for ecological reflection and a call for systemic change to ensure marine sustainability.
